SUMMARY:History Readers Book Club - July
DESCRIPTION:July\n\n\n\n\nLeaving Coy’s Hill\nby Katherine A. Sherbrooke \nJuly 7 \n\n\n\n\nBorn on a farm in 1818\, Lucy Stone dreamt of extraordinary things for a girl of her time\, like continuing her education beyond the eighth grade and working for the abolitionist cause\, and of ordinary things\, such as raising a family of her own. But when she learns that the Constitution affords no rights to married women\, she declares that she will never marry and dedicates her life to fighting for change. \nAt a time when it is considered promiscuous for women to speak in public\, Lucy risks everything for the anti-slavery movement\, her powerful oratory mesmerizing even her most ardent detractors as she rapidly becomes a household name. And when she begins to lecture on the “woman question\,” she inspires a young Susan B. Anthony to join the movement. But life as a crusader is a lonely one. \nWhen Henry Blackwell\, a dashing and forward-thinking man\, proposes a marriage of equals\, Lucy must reconcile her desire for love and children with her public persona and the legal perils of marriage she has long railed against. And when a wrenching controversy pits Stone and Anthony against each other\, Lucy makes a decision that will impact her legacy forever. \nBased on true events\, Leaving Coy’s Hill is a timeless story of women’s quest for personal and professional fulfillment within society’s stubborn constraints. And as an abolitionist and women’s rights activist fighting for the future of a deeply divided country\, Lucy Stone’s quest to live a life on her own terms is as relevant as ever. In this “propulsive\,” “astonishing\,” and “powerful” story\, Katherine Sherbrooke brings to life a true American heroine for a new generation.

SUMMARY:History Readers Book Club - Nov
DESCRIPTION:November\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMedicine River\nby Mary Annette Pember \nNovember 3 \n\n\n\n\nFrom the mid-nineteenth century to the late 1930s\, tens of thousands of Native children were pulled from their tribal communities to attend boarding schools whose stated aim was to “save the Indian” by way of assimilation. In reality\, these boarding schools—sponsored by the U.S. government\, but often run by various religious orders with little to no regulation—were a calculated attempt to dismantle tribes by pulling apart Native families. Children were beaten for speaking their Native languages; denied food\, clothing\, and comfort; and forced to work menial jobs in terrible conditions\, all while utterly deprived of love and affection. \nAmongst those thousands of children was Ojibwe journalist Mary Pember’s mother\, who was was sent to a boarding school in northern Wisconsin at age five. The trauma of her experience cast a pall over Pember’s own childhood and her relationship with her mother. Highlighting both her mother’s experience and the experiences of countless other students at such schools\, their families\, and their children\, Medicine River paints a stark but hopeful portrait of communities still reckoning with the trauma of acculturation\, religion\, and abuse caused by the state. Through searing interviews and careful reporting\, Pember traces the evolution and continued rebirth of Native cultures and nations in relation to the country that has been intent on eradicating them.

SUMMARY:Nov Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:6:30 PM – 8:00 PM Thursday 12th November Harry Hodges Room Milford City Hall 745 Center Street Milford 45150 \n\nGary Knepp\, local Historian\, will share local historical stories & facts. Always interesting & informative. so bring your questions. \n\n\n\nMore than 300\,000 Ohioans served in the military during the Civil War. They gathered at approximately 60 camps of instruction located throughout the state to organize\, train\, and later to discharge from the army. There was nothing standard about the training the soldiers received at these camps. Some regiments spent a couple of days at camp–enough time to receive rations and weapons and not much else. Other units stayed for months trying to organize. Regiments such as the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry left Camp Dennison well schooled in battlefield drill\, while others like the 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry left the camp largely ignorant of the military arts. \nThe Story of Camp Dennison 1861-1865 chronicles the history of one of the largest of these camps as seen through the eyes of the men who were there. Images of the camp\, drawn from public and private collections\, greatly enhance the book’s narrative. The lives and wartime contributions of thirty-one of “The men of Dennison” are explored in “The Profile” sections. \n\n\n\n\nMore than 100 thousand men from all over Ohio and some from Kentucky\, Tennessee and Illinois\, came to Camp Dennison to receive their basic instruction as Union soldiers from 1861-1865. Thousands more were patients at the General Hospital. Camp Dennison recruits fought in the major battles of the war including Shiloh\, Chickamauga\, Antietam and Gettysburg. This presentation will tell their stories with a special focus on the camp’s relationship with the Village of Milford and the soldiers from this area.
