SUMMARY:History Readers Book Club - January
DESCRIPTION:January 6\n\n\n\n\nFinding Margaret Fuller\n by Allison Partake \n\n\n\n\nIn the company of Ralph Waldo Emerson and his circle of enlightened friends\, the young\, beautiful\, and brilliant Margaret Fuller becomes “the radiant genius and fiery heart” of the Transcendentalists. She inspires Louisa May Alcott\, sparks Nathaniel Hawthorne to create Hester Prynne\, and forms close bonds with Henry David Thoreau and Emerson himself. However\, Margaret’s soul yearns for more than poetry and drama\, leading her on a journey of adventure and self-discovery. \nFrom hosting a women-only literary salon in Boston to becoming the first woman permitted entry to Harvard’s library\, Margaret defies societal conventions as an activist for women’s rights and a champion for humanity. On the gritty New York streets\, she spars with Edgar Allan Poe and reports on the work of Frederick Douglass. And when offered an assignment in Europe by editor Horace Greeley\, Margaret becomes the first female foreign news correspondent\, mingling with the likes of Frédéric Chopin\, William Wordsworth\, and George Sand. In Rome\, she embarks on a passionate love affair with a Roman count\, causing an international scandal. As a mother and a countess\, Margaret enters a new fight for Italy’s unification. \nWith a star-studded cast and an epic sweep of historical events\, this is a story of an inspiring trailblazer\, a woman who loved big and lived even bigger—a fierce adventurer who transcended the rigid roles ascribed to women and changed history for millions\, all on her own terms.

SUMMARY:History Readers Book Club - July
DESCRIPTION:July\n\n\n\n\nLeaving Coy’s Hill\nby Katherine A. Sherbrooke \nJuly 7 \n\n\n\n\nBorn on a farm in 1818\, Lucy Stone dreamt of extraordinary things for a girl of her time\, like continuing her education beyond the eighth grade and working for the abolitionist cause\, and of ordinary things\, such as raising a family of her own. But when she learns that the Constitution affords no rights to married women\, she declares that she will never marry and dedicates her life to fighting for change. \nAt a time when it is considered promiscuous for women to speak in public\, Lucy risks everything for the anti-slavery movement\, her powerful oratory mesmerizing even her most ardent detractors as she rapidly becomes a household name. And when she begins to lecture on the “woman question\,” she inspires a young Susan B. Anthony to join the movement. But life as a crusader is a lonely one. \nWhen Henry Blackwell\, a dashing and forward-thinking man\, proposes a marriage of equals\, Lucy must reconcile her desire for love and children with her public persona and the legal perils of marriage she has long railed against. And when a wrenching controversy pits Stone and Anthony against each other\, Lucy makes a decision that will impact her legacy forever. \nBased on true events\, Leaving Coy’s Hill is a timeless story of women’s quest for personal and professional fulfillment within society’s stubborn constraints. And as an abolitionist and women’s rights activist fighting for the future of a deeply divided country\, Lucy Stone’s quest to live a life on her own terms is as relevant as ever. In this “propulsive\,” “astonishing\,” and “powerful” story\, Katherine Sherbrooke brings to life a true American heroine for a new generation.

SUMMARY:History Readers Book Club - August
DESCRIPTION:August\n\n\n\n\nThe Professor and the Madman\nby Simon Winchester \nAugust 4 \n\n\n\n\nWhen the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary put out a call during the late 19th century pleading for “men of letters” to provide help with their mammoth undertaking\, hundreds of responses came forth. Some helpers\, like Dr. W.C. Minor\, provided literally thousands of entries to the editors. But Minor\, an American expatriate in England and a Civil War veteran\, was actually a certified lunatic who turned in his dictionary entries from the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Simon Winchester has produced a mesmerizing coda to the deeply troubled Minor’s life\, a life that in one sense began with the senseless murder of an innocent British brewery worker that the deluded Minor believed was an assassin sent by one of his numerous “enemies.” \nWinchester also paints a rich portrait of the OED’s leading light\, Professor James Murray\, who spent more than 40 years of his life on a project he would not see completed in his lifetime. Winchester traces the origins of the drive to create a “Big Dictionary” down through Murray and far back into the past; the result is a fascinating compact history of the English language (albeit admittedly more interesting to linguistics enthusiasts than historians or true crime buffs). That Murray and Minor\, whose lives took such wildly disparate turns yet were united in their fierce love of language\, were able to view one another as peers and foster a warm friendship is just one of the delicately turned subplots of this compelling book.
