THE HISTORY OF MILFORD, OHIO
1796: Beginnings
Rev. Francis McCormick, a Revolutionary War veteran, arrives in the area, laying the groundwork for future settlement.
McCormick founds the first Methodist Class in the Northwest Territory.
John Nancarrow sells his 230-acre land holding to Philip Gatch, marking a pivotal moment in the area’s development.
First Mill
John Hageman constructs a small grist mill, harnessing the water power of the Little Miami River, indicating the start of Milford’s industrial growth.
Ethan Stone establishes an oil mill in Milford, further diversifying the local economy.
Village Formation
Gatch sells 125 acres to Ambrose Ransom, who quickly sells 64 ½ acres to John Hageman, setting the stage for the village’s formal establishment.
First Postmaster
Aaron Matson becomes the first postmaster and cooper, signifying the growth of community services.
The first tannery in Milford is operated by John Losh, enhancing the village’s industrial base.
Origins of the name Milford
The name “Milford” comes into widespread use, named for its status as a safe ford north of the Ohio River.
The Ohio General Assembly authorizes the construction of a covered toll bridge, known as a “kissing bridge,” over the Little Miami River.
Milford is Incorporated
Milford is incorporated by an act of the Ohio General Assembly, and the first election of village officers is held.
Little Miami Railroad
The Little Miami Railroad reaches Milford, significantly impacting the village’s connectivity and economic development.
Milford Seminary
- Milford Seminary is established, offering education above the grade school level.
Steel Bridge
The covered “kissing bridge” is replaced by a steel bridge, marking a new era in transportation infrastructure.
A new steel bridge opens, replacing the 1894 “iron bridge” and further modernizing the town’s infrastructure.
End of Passenger Trains
The last passenger trains pass through Milford, marking the end of an era for the local railroad station.
Milford Becomes a City
After a census count of 5,232, Milford attains city status, reflecting its growth and development over nearly two centuries.

Tax Deductible
A portion of your membership dues may be tax deductible. Check with your tax adviser.
Fund Drive
Annual memberships drives are held in November to renew memberships for the following year. Memberships are accepted anytime for the current year. It’s always the RIGHT time to join!
Memorial Donations
If you would like to make a donation in memory of someone, the honoree’s name will be added to our List of Remembrance. Donations are welcome via check, PayPal, or Credit Card.
Historical Collections
Our collections rotate throughout the year within Promont, but are also used in external exhibits. They can even be used as a source of historical research on specific topics.
